Often referred to as the “City of Open Gates,” Miskolc is the center of the Northern Hungary region. It is one of the few European cities whose history dates back approximately 70,000 years. Archaeological finds discovered in the city center confirm the presence of prehistoric humans, making Miskolc and its surroundings one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in Hungary.

Among its most notable attractions is the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, considered unique even on a European level. The city is also home to one of Hungary’s most important medieval monuments, Diósgyőr Castle—also known as the Castle of the Queens—where visitors can explore Central Europe’s largest collection of life-sized historical figures in a panopticon exhibition.

Lillafüred is the city’s most popular tourist area, offering a wide range of outdoor activities for visitors. From the Hanging Gardens of the Palotaszálló, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Hungary’s highest waterfall, take a boat ride on Lake Hámori, travel on the forest narrow-gauge railway, or admire the stunning landscape from the chairlift. During a leisurely walk, you can even taste authentic freshly fried trout.

Other notable attractions include the Miskolc National Theatre, the Szeleta Cave (prehistoric cave), the Zoo and Cultural Park, and the Wooden Church.
